 Engaruka, Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Highlands and Mt.Oldoinyo Lengai 7Days

TRIP Narration: Crater Highlands are in the Northern edge of Ngorongoro conservation Area. Starting at Nainokanoka Village finish at Ngaresero Village near Lengai.Accommodation: to stay in Tents at Camp. Top Quality trekking in a remote and rugged area, with Wildlife viewing and a chance to meet the Maasai people in their own environment. All trekking groups must be accompained by an armed Park Ranger plus Donkeys (Land Rover 110 of Maasai) to carry supplies and equipments.


Day by day Detail

Day 1:
Arrive day pick up from Kilimanjaro International Airport or transferred from Nairobi to Arusha by Shuttle bus.Overnight at the Hotel booked in Arusha.

Day 2:
Drive from Arusha to Engaruka via the Maasai market of Mto wa Mbu, where you can buy your personals, including fresh fruits, Makonde carving. If interested you can visit a local banana beer brewery in the village.

Our guide will explain to you how the local banana beer is made. Late in the afternoon you drive to Engaruka Ruins. Engaruka Ruins are the ruins of a terraced stone city and complex irrigation system, estimated to be over 500 years old, lying on the eastern side of Embakai. Nobody knows who built the city.

There is no tradition of stone building in this part of Africa. Almost certainly the Mbulu people occupied it, immediately before the Maasai came into the area. After setting up the tents, you can walk around yourself and discover this impressive ancient village, while your dinner is prepared.

Day 3:
After breakfast you load your luggage on the donkeys and start walking through colourful Maasai village, in the Eastern arm of the Rift Valley. You will reach Embakaai Crater about six to eight hours later.

Our guide knows a lot about Tanzanian and Maasai culture and will explain about it while walking. He can tell a lot about interesting birds, insects, plants and trees and about the Wildlife you meet. In the evening you will set up the camp at the rim of Embakaai crater. You can enjoy a beautiful Sunset.

Day 4:
The third day of trekking it is worthwhile to get up very early, so you don`t miss the beautiful, panoramic sunrise above the lake in Embakaai Crater. After breakfast and loading the donkeys you start walking on the rim of the crater and heading for Nayobi village, about 3hours walking
from the crater. Here you will fill the water bottles and have lunch. After this break you proceed walking (2hours) and camp under some Acacia trees.

Day 5:
After breakfast you discover a new beautiful landscape while walking down to the floor of the Rift valley. Here Lake Natron is vissible, Oldoinyo Lengai and Serengeti plains. The Car will pick you up and drive to the Lake Natron camp where you can refresh yourself at the Engaresero River. Dinner and overnight at Lake Natron Campsite.

 
Day 6:
 Early in the morning you take the Flamingo tour on the shore of Lake Natron (0.5hrs drive).
You return to the camp for lunch and visit the Engaresero River waterfalls later in the afternoon, where you can swim in non-polluted water.

 
Day 7:
 In the midnight you start climbing the activer Volcano Oldoinyo Lengai (a Maasai name meaning "the mountain of God"). It takes 4-6hrs to climb,
so you take your breakfast on the rim of the crater, from where you have a nice view over the Serengeti plains and Lake Natron. If you're lucky you can also see Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro from here. After descending you proceed to the next destination.
